Hepburn, Andrew B. An Exposition of the Blasphemous Doctrines and Delusions of the So Called Latter-day Saints or Mormons. Sheffield: Mary Thomas & Son, 1852.
Display Abstract

An exposé of Mormonism written by a former Mormon. The author complains that he had never heard of the Book of Mormon until after his baptism. The Book of Mormon cannot be believed since the Three Witnesses left the Church, it mentions things that would occur in the New Testament hundreds of years before they happened, and it contradicts the Bible. The author alleges that there is a chronological discrepancy in the Book of Mormon when it says that Lehi left Jerusalem 600 years before the birth of Jesus. He accepts the Spaulding theory regarding its origin.

Display Abstract

A polemical tract against the doctrines of Mormonism and the Book of Mormon. The testimony of the Book of Mormon witnesses is suspect since they all left the Church. The Book of Mormon shows evidence of borrowing from the language of the Bible and the King James Version. The Book of Mormon also contradicts the Bible in many places. These and other anachronisms in the book make it difficult to believe it to be the word of God.

An historical work on Mormonism, from a non-Mormon perspective. The author notes what he feels are several problems in the testimonies of the Book of Mormon witnesses. He recounts Anthon’s 1834 letter of denial and accepts the Spaulding theory for the book’s origin. He also asserts that much of the material from the Book of Mormon has been plagiarized from the Bible and that there are many anachronisms and ungrammatical expressions in the book.

Burns, Dawson. Mormonism Explained and Exposed. London: Houlston and Stoneman, 1853.
Display Abstract

A polemical tract against Mormonism. The Book of Mormon abounds in anachronisms, such as the use of the compass in 600 B.C. The Book of Mormon witnesses only claimed to see the plates with their “spiritual eyes,” therefore their testimony is of questionable value. The author asserts that the Spaulding theory best accounts for the origin of the Book of Mormon.

Chambers, Robert E. “History of the Mormons.” N.p., 1853.
Display Abstract

A polemical work against Mormonism. The testimony of the Book of Mormon witnesses may be discredited due to the fact that most of them were members of the Smith and Whitmer families. The 1834 Anthon denial is cited. The Spaulding theory is accepted by the author as the most likely source behind the Book of Mormon, which he inds full of errors of grammar and anachronisms.

Display Abstract

A polemical/evangelical work against Mormonism. The Bible is all- sufficient as a guide to salvation and there is no need for the Book of Mormon. The story of the Jaredite barges is ridiculed. The testimony of Book of Mormon witnesses is rejected. The author questions the use of King James translation language in the Book of Mormon. This is seen as evidence of plagiarism. The author accepts the Spaulding theory for the book’s origin.

Watt, George D. Journal of Discourses. Reported by G. D. Watt, J. V. Long, and others. 26 Vols. Imprint varies: Vol. 1 published by O. Pratt, Liverpool, England, 1854-86.
Display Abstract

The Journal was the proposal of George D. Watt, who was Brigham Young\'s stenographer. Watt had recorded several early sermons in Pitman shorthand, and proposed to the LDS Church that this and other material be published, with printing to be done in England where printing costs were cheaper. The church\'s First Presidency immediately approved the idea, and officially granted Watt the privilege of preparing and publishing them. Watt recorded the material in the first four volumes of sermons himself, and he continued to contribute through volume twelve, but at least eleven other stenographers were involved. After recording the sermons, Watt transcribed them and sent them to the speaker for careful review. By far, Young has the most sermons recorded in the Journal, with 390. For at least the first volume, Young personally edited his own sermons. For future volumes, Young helped to select which sermons should be included in the publication, and he assigned his personal secretary to carefully copy-edit the manuscript pages before publication. The full title of the journal was inconsistent across volumes. The title of the first volume was Journal of Discourses by Brigham Young, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, His Two Counsellors, the Twelve Apostles, and Others. In volume 6, the title was shortened to Journal of Discourses by President Brigham Young, His Two Counsellors, the Twelve Apostles, and Others. In some of the first 19 volumes, the word \"Delivered\" was added to the title to precede the word \"by\". Some of these volumes omitted the words \"and Others\" and some replaced the phrase \"His Two Counsellors\" with \"His Counselors\". Volume 20 was the first published after the death of Brigham Young, and the title used was Journal of Discourses by President John Taylor and Other Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Also, Remarks by Other Prominent Elders. Volume 21—published after John Taylor had been ordained as Young\'s successor to the office of President of the Church—adopted the title Journal of Discourses by President John Taylor, His Counsellors, the Twelve Apostles, and Others, which remained consistent until the final 26th volume.

Answers questions concerning the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon agrees with the Bible because they are both of divine origin and God does not disagree with himself. The Bible has been robbed of plain and simple truths. All are required to repent and accept the message of the Book of Mormon.

In 1827 an angel of the Lord appeared in fulfillment of the revelations provided in Daniel and Revelation. The Book of Mormon contains the fullness of Christ’s gospel, and the kingdom that was established upon the principles taught in the Book of Mormon has begun to roll forth from the tops of the mountains to establish the Lord’s Zion. It is through this book that the guests are being called to the Lord’s marriage feast.

The book contains various anachronisms, including the mention of the Mariner’s compass and the use of scimitars hundreds of years before they were ever in use. Richards, Willard, and George A. Smith, eds. History of Joseph Smith. Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1858.
Display Abstract  Display Keywords

The body of the work is \"a narrative of the prophet Joseph Smith\"; most of the text was written by scribes rather than by Smith. The parts of the work attributed to Smith were either dictated by Smith to a scribe or consist of a secretary or historian independently outlining Smith\'s activities and statements for a given time period. Much of the writing occurred after Smith\'s death in 1844. From handwriting analysis, scholars have identified the following men as the primary scribal authors of the work during the time periods indicated: Oliver Cowdery (1829–38) John Whitmer (1829–38) Sidney Rigdon (1830–38) Frederick G. Williams (1832–39) Orson Hyde (1833–36) W. W. Phelps (1831?–44) Warren Parrish (1835–37) Sylvester Smith (1834–36) Warren A. Cowdery (1836–38) George W. Robinson (1836–40) James Mulholland (1838–39) Robert B. Thompson (1839–41) Howard Coray (1840–41) James Sloan (1840–43) Willard Richards (1841–54) William Clayton (1842–44) Thomas Bullock (1843?–56) Robert Lang Campbell (1845–50, 1854–56) Leo Hawkins (1853–56) Jonathan Grimshaw (1853–56) Although Smith died in 1844, the compilation of his actions and words was not completed until 1856. Apostle Willard Richards was the chief editor of the work from 1841 until 1854. Apostle George A. Smith was the chief editor from 1854 until its completion in 1856. After Smith\'s death, apostle Wilford Woodruff allowed his extensive journal entries to be used to coordinate dates and clarify statements made by Smith. The completed work was read by and revised by church president Brigham Young and was published in 1858 by the LDS Church under the title History of Joseph Smith. Most of the material that resulted in History of Joseph Smith had been originally published in serial form over a 25-year period in the Times and Seasons, the Deseret News, or the Millennial Star.
