I have heard people say that the Book of Mormon does not contain the fulness of the Gospel because the only references to the higher temple ordinances are short and superficial. However, a careful examination of the writings of Nephi and Lehi, including the well-known verses of 2 Nephi 31:19–20, will reveal that the Book of Mormon prophets were familiar with the details of the doctrine of Christ and the covenant path from start to finish. This post is an expanded version of an eleven-minute video devotional given to the Collections Zone of the Salt Lake City Headquarters Mission on 1 February 2024.
Some Latter-day Saints have a mistaken idea of the meaning of the phrase “fulness of the Gospel.” The mistake is to misinterpret the phrase “fulness of the Gospel” as meaning ALL of the Gospel including temple blessings. The phrase “fulness of the Gospel” refers to what it takes to become qualified for all of God’s blessings – which is the 4th Article of Faith. The 4th Article of Faith is “the fullness of the Gospel” as shown by several quotes in the Book of Mormon that say this is my doctrine and the doctrine is faith in Christ, repentance, baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost – which constitute the 4th Article of Faith:
2 Nephi 31: 2 – 21
2 Nephi 32: 2 – 6
3 Nephi 11:31 – 40
3 Nephi 27: 19 – 21
