Dear Ms. Goldberg:
I suggest taking a look at Brian C. Hales, “Denying the Undeniable”: Examining Early Mormon Polygamy Renunciations,” which appeared fairly recently in Journal of Mormon History 44/3.
Unfortunately, I don’t have an electronic copy that I can publicly share.
The bottom line is that, according to Brian Hales, the claim is false.
I have a question concerning Joseph Smith making a sworn statement to the effect that he had only one wife when at the time he had already been married to multiple wives. Is this a confirmed fact? If so, how can it be explained?
