Has anyone else come across the idea that another star or sun caused the “no darkness when the night came” (3 Ne. 1:15)? If I recall correctly, this idea was advanced by one of the early brethren, but I haven’t yet been able to find a reference again.
While a supernova may be the best explanation for this event under consensus theory, there may be better explanations, such as through the lens of plasma cosmology. Birkeland currents can explain astronomical phenomena, including supernovas, with more predictable results.
Building on the idea of another sun having caused night to appear as day, a sufficient increase of electrical current to a planet, even one in our solar system, could cause that planet to shine like a star, whether permanently or temporarily, when the intensity decreases.
