Very good article Stephen. I guess for the most part, we as common members, are not aware of the missionary effort in the south in the 19th century. Some comparisons of course can be made of the restored gospel of modern times, and the Church in the time of Paul. One is quite interesting, being that the United States is an extension of the Roman Empire who were not friendly with the Christians in the days of old and in our time was not friendly with the LDS Church.
