As you point out, Nimrod convinced his people to build a colossal pseudo temple that was high enough to be above waters of a possible subsequent flood. These people were scattered but continued to build similar towers in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Do you think that they continued to build them for the same reasons?
Encyclopedia Britannica reports archeological evidence, with the assistance of aerial ground penetrating radar, that the Tower of Babel was in fact in the center of Babylon. The bricks were all plundered over time to build up the city of Babylon
