I was hoping that your article would discuss Moses 7:45, in which Enoch asks “When shall the blood of the Righteous be shed, that all they that mourn may be sanctified and receive eternal life?” In a footnote you noted that the baptismal covenants recited in Mosiah 18:8-10 involve willingness of the saints to be like God in compassion, ” and are willing to mourn with those who mourn”. It seems to me that Enoch uses this phrase, “they that mourn” specifically to identify those who look, prospectively or retrospectively, toward the atoning suffering of Christ, and mourn in empathy with the suffering of the Son of God. It is not just an expression of promising empathy to other saints who are grieving the loss of loved ones to death, but specifically a covenant to sorrow for the suffering of the innocent Savior. The covenant to sorrow for the Savior is renewed each time we covenant to always remember the body and blood of the Son in the Sacrament. And it makes clear that the beatitude blessing “those who mourn” is specifically directed to those who mourn for Jesus as part of this covenant.
