The King James Bible was written in English English as opposed to American English. In the former, ‘corn’ refers to grain collectively, or to the chief cereal crop grown in a particular area; so wheat in England, oats in Scotland. Although in recent years, the American meaning of maize is certainly understood among all British English speakers, that certainly wasn’t true in King James’s seventeenth century.
